  UNIFORMS and WEAPONS:

Headgear:

Kepi, Slouch Hat, or Forage Cap.  Kepi is to be worn with dress uniform with brass infantry bugle, company letter and regiment numbers on top.  Forage cap will be worn in the field and should have minimal brass on it.    

Uniform:

Sack coat (left picture) or Frock coat in dark blue color.  Frock coat (right picture) will be worn at evening Balls as a dress uniform.  Vest is optional, dark blue as well.  Shirt should be the pullover type white in color or in an acceptable pattern "sent from home".  Trousers, light blue, with cloth suspenders. 

Boots:

Black, leather sole ankle high "Jefferson bootee" type only.  Nothing modern allowed.

Socks:

Heavy wool type, grayish or off white in color.

Leather Gear:

The typical leather gear worn by the infantryman was a cartridge box with shoulder strap and "US" & Eagle plates, a waist belt with "US" buckle plate, cap box, bayonet and scabbard.  All leather will be black in color.

Eyeglasses:

If you must wear eyeglasses while reenacting, they must be of a period type frame.  Nothing modern allowed.

Haversack:

The haversack was used to carry rations, extra clothing and equipment, personal items and anything else the soldier wanted.

Canteen:

The canteen was covered with wool and carried by a cloth strap.  Many different color covers were used.  For example, dark blue (preferred), sky blue, grey-brown.

Mess gear:

Each soldier will need the basic items.....tin plate, fork, knife and spoon, 1 or 2 pint tin cup.  All should be period type.  Stainless items acceptable. 

Blankets:

The gum blanket is needed to lie on at night to keep the ground moisture from getting to you.  It was a rubberized blanket that was also used by the infantry as a rain cape.  A must have item in Florida.

Also the regular wool blanket to wrap up in at night in the camp.  Grey in color.

Firearms:

Most regular infantry units used the 1861 Springfield rifle musket.  The Springfield is a .58 caliber, muzzle loaded rifle, that weighed almost 10 pounds and could fire a projectile effectively at a distance of 500 yards.  A good soldier could fire 3 aimed shots in one minute.
